Gardening Work during January 2024

Despite many days of very cold, frosty or wet weather during January our gardening volunteers managed to undertake some work in the gardens. 

Wildlife sightings and a list of some of the plants in flower during January are reported in a separate post on the Nature blog, click here for the details.

• Carefully removed ivy from the wall bordering the Friends Meeting House.
• Dug out brambles from two areas in The Tasting Garden; behind the yew hedge by the Meeting House Lane wall and around the old cherry tree at the northern end of the garden.
• Cleared beech leaves that had been blown into a large pile on the path behind the folly.
• Cut back old foliage from the catmint and other plants in the Hollygon.
• Tidied up the plants in pots intended for sale and regularly removed excess rainwater from the trays.
• The small Czar plum tree only produced one plum in 2023 and was in much need of extra care.  Volunteers removed grass and weeds from around the base and covered the soil with a three inch layer of mulch.  See photographs of the work and the end result.
