Heritage Open Days 2023 - Creativity Unwrapped
Saturday 9 and Saturday 16 September 2023
Saturday 9 and Saturday 16 September 2023
Friends of the Storey Gardens volunteers were in The Tasting Garden on Saturday 9 and Saturday 16 September 2023. The weather was fine apart a shower on the first Saturday. Over the two days we welcomed 436 visitors and others came into the gardens during the intervening week.
This year we hosted two events.
One event was entitled “Gardens of Surprises” and the other was “Recreating The Tasting Garden Artwork”.
The Gardens of Surprises was a combined in person and online event. There was a six point Creativity Trail both in the gardens and available on the FOSG website.
The trail celebrated both the creativity of nature and the creativity of humans. There was a display of paper butterflies in the Arboriculturalist’s Workshed, poems specifically written for the gardens and information about the creation of fruit varieties. Holly the hedgehog and The Storey Gardens pixies were hiding but visitors could read about them.
The online trail is still available on the website. Click here to access it.
The Recreating The Tasting Garden Artwork event celebrated the replacement of the first two of the stolen fruit sculptures in The Tasting Garden. The new sculptures were replaced in March 2023 and are made of Portland stone located on new sandstone plinths.
On the first Saturday we were joined by The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery who hold weekly sessions in the Storey Gardens. They explained their free Nature and Wellbeing Programme to visitors. They also had information and interesting items for children to feel, butterfly specimens and a butterfly net. The main attraction, however, was the bubble wand.
The Friends of the Storey Gardens had a range of plants for sale. Apples, pears, beans and RHS flower cards were available. See a selection of the many photographs taken over the two days in the slideshows below.
