The year 2024 marked 200 years of technical education in the local area of Lancaster and Morecombe.
In 1824 a Mechanics Institute was established in Mary Street, Lancaster. The Institute moved to the site of The Storey in Meeting House Lane in 1856. It was completely rebuilt (1888 - 1891) by Sir Thomas Storey, a major local employer and philanthropist. The building was renamed The Storey Institute and continued as a centre for technical education until 1962.
The technical education in science and the arts is now undertaken by Lancaster and Morecambe College located in Morecambe Road.
The Storey Brother's mills in Lancaster produced printed textiles, including oilcloth table coverings.
As part of our Heritage Open Days event in 2024, the Friends of the Storey Gardens and their friends created a series of new textile designs. The ideas were inspired by both the history of technical education in Lancaster and the Storey Gardens as they are today.
