The Light Up Lancaster 2024 event was held on the three evenings of Thursday 7 November to Saturday 9 November 2024.
There were light installations across the centre of Lancaster and the Storey Gardens was one of the venues.
The installation in the Storey Gardens was called The Matter of the Heart. It consisted of specially constructed light cubes. These flashed in time with the real life heartbeat of people in the Lancaster locality throughout the festival hours (5-10pm) each evening.
Participants were provided with a Fitbit on a band by the artists Anna and Davi from idontloveyouanymore.org. When the Fitbit was next to a participant's skin it linked to an App on their mobile phone. This in turn was linked to their specific light cube displaying their name and association with Lancaster.
The light cubes were located on the upper and lower levels of the Copper Beech Garden. Visitors could walk around all the 70 light cubes and were very touched that they were experiencing a garden of Lancaster hearts beating. People who had participated as a heartbeat brought friends along
