Heritage Open Days 2025
Theme - "Architecture"
Friday 12 September to Saturday 20 September 2025
The Friends of the Storey Gardens and The Storey held a combined event for the 2025 England wide Heritage Open Days festival. This year’s theme was architecture.
On Saturday 13 September volunteers provided a warm welcome to visitors at the Castle Park entrance despite the cold and sometimes wet weather.
At the entrance we had information about the portico gate.
Another aspect we were featuring was the stained-glass window on the first floor of The Storey. By the window there was a display of information about the window itself.
We also had paper copies of the “Walk around the Block”. In 2024 the Friends had created this short walk around The Storey locality highlighting local connections. It was still applicable for 2025 as the walk highlighted buildings of architectural interest.
You can download the map from this website and go on the trail. Alternatively, if you cannot visit in person there is an online version of the route with photographs of the places and views described. Click here to read more about the "Walk around the Block".
Close by the stained-glass window was a table of produce for visitors to sample. There were Duke of Devonshire and Ribston Pippin apples and beans from The Tasting Garden, jam and cakes made by volunteers.
There was a lot of interest in the portico gate, the stained-glass window and the "Walk around the Block".

We were fortunate to have periods of fine weather and sunshine between the rain showers. This gave many of our visitors the opportunity to see the gardens. Most of those we met in the gardens were not local to the Lancaster area and had never been in the gardens before.
